Linda Gustitus
Solitary Confinement in US Prisons From the Exception to the Routine
The U.S. is a world leader in the number of people it holds in prolonged solitary confinement.  Solitary confinement past 10 days has been shown to bring no benefit, but clear harm.  Depending on its length and conditions, it is treated as torture by the international community.  Ms. Gustitus received her Bachelor's Degree in 1969 from Oberlin College, and her J.D. cum laude from Wayne State University Law School.  She then served for 24 years as an aide to Senator Carl Levin.  She is now President of NRCAT (National Religious Campaign Against Torture) and will discuss NRCAT and its recent successes in Maine.

Linda Paey
Pain Treatment in Florida in 2012
A Florida law took effect in 2011 to limit the ability of doctors and clinics to sell painkillers.  It also established a database to help pharmacists identify "doctor shoppers" and "pill mills."  But it has unintended consequences.  Linda knows because she is the caregiver for her husband, Richard Paey, the pain patient sentenced to 25 years in the FL prison system for using "too much" medication.  He served 3.5 years before being pardoned by governor Crist in September 2007.  The "open issue" here is balance.  How much addiction does the law block vs. how much pain does it cause?  Do we really know?
